Have you considered?
We won't buy "conflict diamonds" because the people who mine it are slaves, but we're quick to buy oil from countries in which women are essentially property?

Never thought about that, wow
Been thinking about this one for a while now...guess one aspect of these purchases is that most of us don't buy diamonds on a regular basis, and maybe we can be a bit more particular about this purchase when the time comes to buy the diamond jewelry. Gas and oil, on the other hand (for a great majority of us) are a very regular need for everyday transportation and while we can possibly research which companies in general have the better practices, part of the difficulty arises in that a vast majority of our world's oil is produced in these countries that continue to hold on to such gender biased beliefs. They do hold quite the monopoly on oil production, unfortunately. Similarly, we could ask ourselves why we "support" countries through textile industry which continue to utilize child labour and where big corporations pay their employees very poorly and sell product for much more (ie China) instead of trying to support more equitably paid people for the work that they do....Just some of my thoughts in return, hope I have made some sense :)here
